The Story
While developing our operations report, we discovered that our most logical assumptions did not always match the facts. Behind seemingly simple figures were unexpected patterns, missing context and complex challenges. In this session, we share how a report that seemed almost finished turned into a search for real insights. We show the obstacles we encountered along the way and why data quality, context and human interpretation are at least as important as dashboards and KPIs. An honest story about surprising insights, assumptions and the lessons that can help any larger organisation make better decisions based on data.

As Team Lead Internal Data & Application Services at VITO, Steven Macquoij operates at the intersection of data, technology and strategy. He leads a multidisciplinary ICT team responsible for data, application and digital workplace solutions across the organisation. With a strong focus on data-driven decision-making, governance and digital transformation, he helps turn complex operational challenges into concrete actions and measurable impact.
Peter Stouthuysen is a data visualisation expert specialising in developing data visualisations and dashboards that translate complex information into accessible and actionable insights. With 15 years of experience at VITO, he is part of the Insights Team, where he focuses on further developing and aligning Tableau reporting with the needs of the business. Peter also has a background as a researcher in environmental policy and experience as a data visualisation consultant in the retail and insurance sectors.
