Smarter Adhesive Selection with AI

As part of the EGAS project (Expert-Guided Adhesive Selector), imec, Flanders Make and KU Leuven worked with Novatech to develop an AI tool that recommends the most suitable adhesive for each application. The tool uses symbolic AI: AI that reasons using explicit rules and knowledge rather than learning solely from data, making it possible to explain every recommendation transparently. This case is presented by Voka Mechelen-Kempen as part of the Flanders AI Technology Hub.

Who’s Who

Speakers

Jeroen Jordens

Jeroen Jordens is a Senior Researcher at Flanders Make, where he specialises in circular joining technologies and adhesive technology. As a PhD in Chemical Engineering and a European Adhesive Specialist, he combines materials expertise with digital technologies such as AI and digital twins. In the EGAS project, he contributed to the development of an AI tool that supports experts in selecting the most suitable adhesive based on explicit knowledge and rules. During Data in the Kempen, he will share how AI and expert knowledge come together in this practical industrial application.

Simon Vandevelde

Simon Vandevelde is a postdoctoral researcher at KU Leuven in the Declarative Languages and Artificial Intelligence (DTAI) research group, where he specialises in symbolic AI, knowledge representation and reasoning. He contributed to the development of the Knowledge-Based Adhesive Selector, an AI tool that translates domain expertise into transparent and explainable decision support. During Data in the Kempen, he will join Jeroen Jordens to share how symbolic AI can help make complex industrial decisions smarter and more explainable.
